Chapter 12

It looked bad.

Junie fought with Ursula just hours before we found Ursula dead. Then, hours after Garth was publicly insinuating Junie was the killer, he ended up dead himself.

I still didn’t think Junie was behind the murders, but it didn’t look good.

As directed by Flint, Cress and I took off long before the deputies arrived to secure the scene. At home, I didn’t stop pacing until a message came through on Cress’s mirror. According to Flint, Marisela and Arnie seemed mildly suspicious of his manufactured motive for skulking around the school (he claimed to have wound up there on a spur-of-the-moment night walk), but his being the former sheriff meant they didn’t give him grief about it.

The initial findings suggested that whoever had killed Ursula had also killed Garth. But of course since the officers on the island believed they already knew who killed Ursula, Flint wasn’t entirely confident they were looking for signs that might point to the murderer.

After talking with Flint, I sent a crow to Dex to let him know what happened. In the note, I told him we would discuss it in the morning—because, knowing him, he would stay up half the night sending crow after crow to ask me about every detail. Something like that was better done in person.

Sleep came in fits and starts, and it was well into the wee morning hours before I finally dozed deeply.

When I awoke the next day to Sterling batting my cheek with his paw, it felt like I hadn’t slept at all.

“Stop,” I grumbled, rolling over and pulling a pillow over my head. “If you already ate all the food I left out for you, that’s your problem.”

Sterling nosed under my pillow and licked my neck with his scratchy cat tongue. “Someone’s here.”

I bunched my shoulders to keep him from licking me again. “We’ve been over this. It’s just Yasu. He’s harmless, I promise. Just stay downstairs.”

A rhythmic pounding echoed through the house, and my foggy brain struggled to decipher it. “What’s going on?”

Sterling placed his front paws on my shoulder, and I swore the pressure was more than any animal his size should be able to muster. “I told you. Someone’s here. You might want to see to it before they break down the door.”

Those words got me out of bed. Still in my pajamas—dark gray pants and an old black tank top—I headed to the door as the pounding started again.

I pulled it open to reveal Deputy Marisela Johnston in her dark brown uniform. Something like relief swept her features when her eyes landed on me. “What took you so long to answer?”

I squinted against the bright blue sky. “I was still in bed.”

Whatever ease had filled her moments ago was replaced with an edge of suspicion. “Have a late night?”

I shrugged, letting her take from the gesture what she wanted. The last vestiges of sleep fell away, replaced by wariness. Marisela was the one who arrested Junie. As far as I knew, she was the one spearheading the case against my old friend.
